Weirdest place’s to send stuff

We get some really wacky orders sometimes. Our coffee has been drunk all over the world is some of the most beautiful countries to some of the most hostile. Has Bean has a clutch of regular service men and women who order roasted coffee to be sent to conflict area’s.

Our most recent order was for an Hearthware I roast to be sent to an American service man who wanted to roast coffee on 220-240v out there. We were happy to help out, but this is real dedication to coffee roasting.

What ever your thoughts on the current conflicts (and a coffee web blog is not the place to discuss the merits of this), I’m very proud of the people who go out to these countries under the orders of their country to defend and do their best putting life on the line. I’m immensely proud that the coffee might make life a little more bearable for these folks and remind them of some of the finer things back home.

"The Coffee Experts" LOL!

Kenco AdThere is an advert on UK tv from Kenco (owned by Kraft) the self proclaimed “coffee experts”.  Now I normally ignore these ads but I find this one nearly offensive and incredibly misleading. From the advert its showing a colonial style of gap year student, telling the locals they have got it wrong sending the good quality “arabica” for the instant coffee, like it gets decided at origin.

And the most annoying thing is the roasted beans at origin in the sacks waiting to go to make that great “arabica” instant coffee. Every time I see it I reach for the sick bag. And I wonder why as a coffee drinking nation we accept such poor quality coffee, when this rubbish is put out to set up a whole world of misconceptions.

El Salvador, the new Brazil ?

Sounds strange but I truly believe that El Salvador is the new Brazil. Why? Well around 8 years ago Brazil got together and decided that they needed to raise standards and also tell the world they had done so. No Specialty association has done a better job of putting its coffee on the map than Brazil. That was until El Salvador.

Brazils job was a little easier, think of coffee think of Brazil, and the huge machine that is the BSCA has a lot of backing from its farmers. For El Salvador its had to be a different approach. The foundations have always been there, with nearly 70% of varitals are Bourbon, the low yielding high quality and normally superior coffee on the cupping table. A coffee assostiation that goes about its business making friends without making too much noise, letting the coffee do the shouting for them.

This has been brought to the front this weekend with the feast of El Salvador coffees I’ve been enjoying. First we have added New Crop La Fany around a month six weeks ago. At first this coffee frightened me as it was very green and not the caramel overload of last year. But as time has gone on it calmed and is now even better than last year. Just last week we were pleased to see our cup of excellence coffee arrival of finca Las Victorias, with its creamy blackcurrant acidity balanced with sweetness. We have been a supporter of the El Salvador cup of for the past two years, last year being part of the buying group for the number one lot, and this year number 19, where we shared the lot with our friends Ballies in Northern Ireland.

We also have has a coffee called El Borbollon 100% Bourbon , which we think we will be offering very soon, which we roasted for a wholesale customer, and another which we liked but were starting to get worried we may have one or two too many.

You see it’s difficult to say no to these coffees and we have the same problem with Brazils. Last year at one point we had ten Brazils on our range. So now you can see why I’m thinking it’s the new Brazil.

In the cup it just yells to me espresso single origin or for sure espresso blend component. All the ones cupped this year can bring uniqueness to the blend party, components I find hard to find anywhere else. One fruit, one caramel, one sweetness, one blackcurrant just so many options.

It hasn’t been lost with the El Salvador coffee association that espresso is the sexy end of coffee. Espresso sells and builds a brand in a far more attractive way than drip or filter coffee. Bourbon is well suited to espresso (mass generalisation I know but is), but the regions profile is more and more becoming an interesting espresso component. And quietly in the background the association works on this. They invited the UK barista champion to El Salvador when they found out he used San Roberto and La Fany in his blend, for promotion but also to find out why and how they could use this. At the SCAA (Specialty coffee association of America) show this year the Salvadorian association was telling everyone that would listen that James (UK Barista) used their coffee in his blend.

So when the revolution comes don’t say you were not warned. El Salvador is the next big thing in espresso, and I say I can’t wait, it’s in good hands.

Derby County 1 Sunderland AFC 2

Those who know me well know that in my life I have two passions. One is my love for fine coffee and my passion for Specialty coffee, and the other my love for football (all people fom the US please read this as the real football not your version of rugby 😉 )

I’m a Sunderland fan, and of late we have not been doing to well, but yesterday a friend (and competitor in the coffee world) invited both my son and I to watch Sunderland against his beloved Derby County. Two big clubs who have dropped to positions that their support does not deserve.

Paul very kindly bought us the tickets, but made me sit in the Derby end, which was torture. Well I promised Paul in a kind of bet that if we won they I would give him a mention on my blog, so I am. His site is pure beans (www.purebeans.co.uk ) and he’s got some cool stuff if you ignore the vending machines 😉

Top man Paul thanks for the day

New shipper

City Link Van

For most orders sent out over 1.5kg will now be sent with City Link and not ANC parcel firm. We have had lots of feedback from customers saying how un happy they have been with ANC, and we have had thing broken or go missing. So we have now moved to City Link who seem to have a much better systems in place. Now unusually it’s not cheaper than AMC and we are not passing any extra costs onto you. We worked out it was worth it for us to spend less time on claiming for damaged goods, and a few pence extra on shipping to you. Please let us know if you have any experiences you have with our new shipper, good or bad.

I LOVE A TAMPER !

My Tampers

I’m in love with a tamper. It’s a sad state of affairs but I do think they are WOW. We decided to go straight to Reg Barber and ask them to make some has bean tampers, and here they are.

The radical pro has really surprised me, I really like it. We only have a limited supply of these, we do have some more on order, but if you want one be quick here.
