Some of you may remember who have read here for a while that I got a new roaster back in November last year. Others of you who have been here even longer may remember a post I did naming my 25kg probat a couple of years ago.
So to date we have always named our roasters the first being bettsy our 2kg Ambex
then we had Amy my 5kg Ambex
Then we had our 15kg Ambex Bertha
Then we have Gunther our 25kg Probat
And the new addition with no name is our 12kg Probat
So I need your help to name the roaster, comments here, email or carrier pigeon for your entries. Going to keep it going for three weeks until we get a winner, and the winner will win a 3 month subscription pack for the in my mug videos, so a bag of coffee every week for 12 weeks if your in the EU and we will work out something nice if your further afield between us.
You can enter as many times as you like which will give you more chance the more you enter. The name must make me smile every time I use it. My decision will be the final one.
Want to get a better look at it? Then watch this video right beside it.

Thats all for now
Bender
Sid, Herbert, Zaphod, Marvin, Trillian, Toby, Thomas, Terrance, Bert, Ernie…Twinkle, Chesney, Bartrum, Greigor, Igor.
Hey Guys have you ever thought that this roaster could be a girl
bertha the Bean browner, or sprotum.
That’s all I have for now
No wait I got it. The gentle giant!
I would think Marmaduke, or possibly Lancelot, or Horatio.
Gort.
I have a penchant for naming impressive looking machinery Gort. This does not explain why I decided to call my Silvia “Billy”.
Initially thought Thomas (as in the tank engine), then Percy. Or Alberto.
Rory the Roaster
thinking of something that works with Gunther – I reckon Otto might work
Rüdiger ?
Yes, it has to work with Gunther… So, since it’s a Probat, probably a German name…
How about Brennen? (/Brennan?) Kind of Irish – anyone else remember bishop Brennan? – but also implies “to roast” in the Probat’s language…
Hans
It looks like a Bren to me.
Shearer? *runs* No one has beaten me to the punch on Gertie. My rather broken little Gaggia Classic would be honoured to have a much larger bit of kit named after her.
Loving the test card. Brilliant.
Should kids ever be on the cards they’ll be getting musical names, or middle names if I don’t fancy the argument How about Bruce, Dylan, Costello, Jeff as Buckley would be a tad silly, Bragg, Jarvis, Damon?
To cover the German base Jurgen or Klinsmann would work well
I win, right?
Call it Borat the Probat…. I like!
To me, it looks like a Darlek, so it has to be called Davros!
Jeanie
Further Ideas;
Mephesto, Homer, Florence, Derp, Malcovich, Ozzy, Tyrion, Arthas, Thrall, Dante, Randal, Azreal, Brent, Geordie, Jean-Luc, Bruce, Campbell, Harrold, Shrek, Thelonious, Jephetto, Uther.
Ok gonna stop now before I give away my geekery any further
I suggest ‘Smiley,’ because it looks like there’s a giant smile across the front! And, with Smiley as a name, gender is irrelevant! –Amy P.
Hey Tripto, ‘Brennen’ literally means ‘burning’
How about the one and only german name Klaus?
Great Aunt Doris, “Doris” for short
Kona, Zeek, Onyx,
He looks like a Bernard to me!
- Ivor
- One-eyed Willie
OK Sarah Lou -
Bernadette, Cheery, Roberta, Heidi, Lotte, Martha, Matilda, Rose, Angua, Hilda, Henrietta, ‘The assistant’, Ethel, Ethelbert, Angus, Agnus…
Hey Lukas, wouldn’t that be reminiscent of the ‘Fire’ incident?
My vote is for “Jakob”
Samson (boy) or Delilah (girl)
The mascots names of your favourite footy team.
How about combining coffee and football?
Dave
Rosie. Obvious but cute x
As above, gotta keep with the Germanic name & 12kg’s a guyroaster for sure.
My votes would be for Humbert or Hermann.
Günther or Brüno or Heinrich
Sheena the punk ro… aster?
My work here is done
Well the Ambex’s are girls, so the Probat’s must be boys. It’s Gunther’s little brother isn’t it? So it’s got to be a less manly German name…. I suggest Klaus
Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far please keep them coming, loving the creativity.
R2D2 (Roast 2 Drink 2)
Hi Steve,
I suggest “ampersand” – no reason, it’s just a cool name for a machine !
Steve
HAL 9000 (or just Hal to his friends) from Arthur C. Clarke’s Space Odyssey
David Walsh was right. It’s definitely a Hans. As soon as I saw the picture, I thought “That’s a Hans right there”.
Here are a few more suggestions:
- ‘Kaldi’ after the 6th century Yemeni goat-herder who chewed on cherries to stay awake.
- ‘Luigi Bezzera’ (or just Luigi) – who in in 1903 invented espresso with his coffee machine
- Achilles Gaggia – who in 1945 perfects the espresso machine
My favourite is ‘Achilles’. Maybe apt considering the importance of your roaster!
Oskar, Dirk or Axel (f)
redrum
Nero
Rooster
Hey Steve, I suggest you call him ” Berty ” or Bert, which allows you then refer to him in nickname terms ” Big Berty” or Big Bert. eg BadASS Bert. “oh Bad Bert, burnt the coffee”
Regards
Rob Dunne
Bertie for a boy
I suppose you could argue I got beaten to it by the previous poster but my spelling is different
Nellie
Hamish
looks like it has a doggy sort of face, and i reckon if you fix on a tail it’d make a good, Snoopy or Scooby.
It is a pity you have already named Gunther. It would have been nice to call them both Hansel and Gretle.
If I remember correctly this roaster rose from the ashes of the roaster fire (with a little help from your insurers) so how about Phoenix?
If you really want to laugh each time you think of it’s name how about Brian, as in The Life Of Brian? Then each time you screw up a roast you could be nailed to the roaster and sing a chorus of “Always look on the bright side of life”.
