First day (proper) World Barista Championships Atlanta

Today has been all about Colin. Colin Harmon a few weeks ago gave us the opportunity to roast the coffee for his WBC performance thats tomorrow (18th of April). Little did I know that when we agreed that I would have a day like today. Its 1000% one of my best days in coffee.

I’ve roasted coffee for the WBC before which was awesome, but we didn’t have the same kind of involvement within the team as I have today. Colin has been so inclusive, we have done everything from washing glasses to tasting espresso and running through the speech’s. I feel like I’ve given something today, that will help more than just roasting the coffee, and that gives me a real warm feeling. I’ve also gotten so much feedback from the experience to date, I’m winning all around.

So the day started first thing this morning, by a trip to Octane so Colin could prepare ingredients for his signature drink. For me there was little to do apart from enjoying one of the finest Ethiopians I have ever tried, Counter Cultures Misty Valley blew my mind.

Then onto the training room of the WBC where I drank more tasty lovely espresso than is good for one man. The caffeine high was followed by the caffeine low that was painful. An afternoon of competition followed by a couple of hours sleep left me in a good place.

A sign of how seriously I am taking my role in tomorrow is an invitation to the cool party of the competition was turned down for an evening of run through’s and hotel food, because of the early 6am start tomorrow morning.

Will team Ireland win? Maybe the odds from Ladbrooks have us as second favorite. Have we won already, well I know I have, anything that happens tomorrow I will have a great day. This has been amazing, I’m feeling quite emotional about the whole experience which is a little girly but I don’t care, this is why I wanted to be involved in the industry for days like today.

Go team ireland. I hope you will all watch on Saturday at 4pm the link here, I’m the idiot in the Ireland shirt jumping up and down.

I may not be the coolest roaster there, but I’m the most passionate and the most proud of my Barista.
