New Beans

Its been a busy time here with lots of coffees arriveing all at once. This is going to carry on too, all the new crop stuff is landing on our door step and will for the next few months. Where to start.

Brazil Jacu Bird

jacu.jpg

It’s back for its second year. Before you fall over at the price read below.

A while back we sold the famous Kopi Luwak, and the whole time we sold it it bother me. It bothered me in the cup it was an awful cup. It was the only coffee we sold I didn’t like, and I would wake in the middle of the night ridden with guilt that we sold awful coffee for an awful price. So when it was gone we were offered more, but I just couldn’t do it.

So when I heard that on the Camocim farm we buy our coffee from (which is one of my favorite organic coffees ever), has some resident birds on there that like to eat coffee cherry’s I was skeptical and worried, I’d only just begun to enjoy a nights sleep.

But there are some differences, the Luwak eats some awful grade coffee, the Jacu lives on one of the best farms in Brazil, add horrid coffee and an animals intestines, you still have bad coffee but this is proof that good coffee can stay good. The bird eats the cherry and “processes it”. These birds live on the farm and are dwindling in numbers in Brazil. Henrique who owns the farm has no pleasure in forcing the birds to eat the coffee, but when they do

So what’s different in the cup apart from being processed from a birds behind than normal camocim? Side by side there are some differences, the sweetness remains its nuttiness is a little more nutty, but it in the spice like cracked black pepper mixed with cinnamon. This is one gimmick coffee that has some real specialty credentials in the cup.

Why is it more expensive? Well its rare, very very rare, I’ve only seen this in one place in the world, and certainly never in Europe. It takes more time to “pick” and “look after” and well, its an experience coffee something you have to try just to say I’ve done it. If your going to have a pooped coffee I whole heartedly recommend it, it also helps me sleep 🙂

The Brazil Camocims

This farm is one of the best known organic farms in Brazil, And swapped to organic production in 1999 under the ownership of Henrique Sloper Araujo. They are also working towards there Bio Dynamic certification (which share many things with organic but takes some of the procedures to the next level).

I have been lucky enough to meet Henrique a couple of times now and you can see why he may not run his farm “the normal way”. He is incredibly charismatic and what to push the envelope wherever he can (and does).

This year we have four different varietals from the farm. This gives you a chance to taste the different varieties, and make your own mind up what you like. We also have a pack where you can try them all in smaller amounts.

Icatu precoce
Yellow variety. Low acidity, medium to full body, sweet
taste with a hint of citric aroma.
Iapar 59
Red variety. Low acidity, full body, sweet nutty taste and
aroma.
Yellow bourbon
Yellow variety. Low acidity, medium body, delicate sweet
floral aroma and taste, with a note of fresh soil.
Three C’s Coffee
Red variety. This is a blend of three red varieties; Catucai,
Catucaiaçu and Caturra. Low acidity, full body, delicate
sweet taste with a floral note on the aroma.
The cool thing is if you want to try all of these varitals then take a look at

El Salvador Cup of Excellence

Today has been the El Salvador cup of Excellence. I love this auction its probably my favorite auction of them all. El Salvador have it all, great coffee perfect varietal mix (I love there bourbon) great people.

Last year we bought a great orange bourbon from a farm called Alaska which is owned by Ernesto. Ernesto has been a regular mention on this blog ever since, as we kept in touch via email and he sent me loads of pictures of the farm and the coffee as it progressed. On the latest trip I got to meet him at the awards evening and he was as lovely as I expected and genuinely a nice guy.

Ernesto an Me

He’s standing there with his winning certificate as Ernesto won this years competition with his other farm.

Now so often I dont think the number one is necessarily the best coffee, they are normally distinctive but not my favorite. But in this case on a blind table it was amazing and was head and shoulders above other coffees. So amazing I’ve called some friends to see if we could create a buying group. With the help of our importers who phoned some of there friends we were able to secure this amazing lot. This broke the record for El Salvador becoming the most expensive coffee from COE to leave those shores. Its also the highest price we have ever paid for a coffee, and its worth every penny. I hope when it arrives you think the same too.

In the cup I got Fruit Salad with pineapple and lovely citrus acidity. Complex aftertaste with a lovely buttery and velvet like mouth feel. I ran what I had left from the cupping through our Clover and was blown away. I just wish I had some more to run through the espresso machine.

On my trip to El Salvador I got chance to visit the great farm and you can see the pictures at the link here

And my favorite picture from that set here.

Ernesto and me again

A great day for Has Bean its days like today that make me realize what a great job I have being able to secure these wonderful coffees. So pleased.

Brazil Inglaterra

If you haven’t tried our Brazil Inglaterra you must really soon as we are down to our last sack. Its grown by my good friend stephen who went out to check on progress with the new planting. He took as bag of the coffee we roasted for him to give to friends, and took this picture

Also he took some lovely pictures of the new crop

New Beans

I love it when we get new beans. In total we have six (seven if you include the Agua Azul / Quebradon).

To list them –

Guatemala CO2 Decaf Lake Atitlan

I was lucky enough to visit the coop of this coffee on my Guatemala trip last year. I really wanted to stock it, but we have so many guats (it was five and now four plus this one), so it just wasn’t possible. But now its available in decaf what a great opportunity.

In the cup its winey, fruity and very very tasty.

Australian Skyberry

This old favorite returns, one of the first “exotics” we stocked and a great coffee. In the cup it’s very smooth, balanced with rich flavour and a full body, with great buttery tones.

Zambia Lupili Estate

Another return coffee. In the cup is big sharp acidity with good body. Hints of chocolate orange that is so typical of the area. This is a filter / french press coffee that really isn’t an espresso style of coffee. A blender yes an Single origin shot, no.

Ecuador Vilcabamba “valley of longevity”

“Vilcabamba” – quechua for “Sacred Valley” – is the name of a small village in southern Ecuador. Generations of scientists have tried to solve the secret of longevity in this fascinating place and have tried to find an answer to the question why so many people here surpass the age of 100 enjoying their life at best health.

All I know is this delicate cup hits me with spice and pie nuts and is a really unique coffee.

Ethiopian Harar

Everyone who knows coffee knows about Harar. So I wont go into it here

In the cup it’s intense with a complex taste of fruit, wine and chocolate. Harar is special but versatile and will suit espresso and filter/ french press.

Java Blawan

This thick bodied, earthy, honesty cup it everything you would expect from this famous government estate. In the aftertaste that classic mushroom and almost vegetal tones make it a really unusual cup.

Should be something for every one there.
