Mundo Novo Varietal

I’m on a roll, this one seemed the best to do as its linked to the Acaia that I wrote yesterday.

Varietal: Mundo Novo
Related to: Sumatra and Red Bourbon
Origin: Brazil
Grows best at: 800meters or above
Type: Sumatra (typica) / Red Bourbon
Prevalent in: Brazil
Predominant Colour: Red
Fruit size: Large and rounded
Leaf Characteristics: Large, an intermediate between Typica and Bourbon
Botany: Natural Hybred

Special Notes:

Mundo novo is particularly suited to the Brazil climate, and is well liked by the coffee farmer for its very high yield and its resistance to pest and disease and its ability to be planted very densely. This is also complimented by the height that the coffee plant can grow.

The plant yields around about 30% more than the bourbon varietal. So you can see why it occupies around 40% of the coffee growing areas of Brazil.

High yields tend to (anecdotal evidence) lower quality but Mundo Novo does regally make appearances in the Brazil cup of Excellence program.

First documented in the 1940’s (no exact date known), in Brazil by the Agronomico of Campinas

Varietal characteristics: Sweet, thick mouthfeel, low acidity.

Acaia Coffee Varietal

Sorry if this a little bit Geeky, but something I have wanted to for a while is get a file together with all the coffee varietal I can find out about in one place. But to motivate and break it down for me I’m going to do it as a blog post at a time. the final plan will be to put this into on downloadable pdf booklet.

I’d like you if you spot any omission or error let me know either via email or via the comments and I’ll investigate it.

Predominant Colour: Red
Fruit size: Large
Leaf Charicteristics: Large, an intermediate between Typica and Bourbon
Botany: Natural Hybred

Special Notes:
A very rare varietal I have seen this some times in Cup of Excellence lots in Brazil but never come across it until this year in an offering.
A hybred from the Mundo Novo plant its mainly found in Brazil and is best grown 800meters or above. Fruit is large in size and in colour is predominately red.
Is not really found outside of Brazil, when tried its results have been varied. It has adapted well to the Brazil climate and conditions.
Its down side is it is susceptible to all coffee plant disease and to pest,
Mundo Novo is rare enough and not very prevalent, but acaia is incredibly rare.

Coffee Project

I’ve been reading loads recently about coffee varietals, but have found it difficult to find one place where all the knowledge is pooled. So I plan over the coming weeks to write a whole heap of individual papers for each varietal I know about, and then at a later stage once its done pool them all together in a downloadable pdf.

I hope the first will go up this weekend at some point, and I’d love any one to comment if they have something to add or if they think I may have something not quite right. Please comment below and I’ll dive in and edit, or email me. Even if you are not sure I’ll investigate just in case.

The final part on how Has Bean Started.

Continuing in the series I’ve posted pt four of four on how has bean stated. If you missed previous articles take a look on our articles section here, or you can go direct to part 4 here.

I’ve enjoyed writing this very very much, I hope you have enjoyed reading it. Its been a rollercoaster, and I expect many more ups and downs, but as long as the ups are more than the downs.

In my mug posting is going to be a little delayed, my home desk computer hard drive gave up the ghost on Sunday, and this has all the important files on it to finish it off. I should (SHOULD) be back in business tomorrow.

Thanks very much for all your very kind words via email or on orders about the series it’s been fantastic fun writing it, and you out there seem to have enjoyed reading it.

On other news we are seeing some really good coffee come through our cupping lab at the moment, and some stuff that’s finding its way on to the site. I’ll tell you more in the blog over the next few days, but I’ve also been working very hard on a blend that’s going to blow your mind.

Were also seeing the end of some of our regular coffees for a few weeks while we wait for few crops to arrive. What’s been a real spurt in demand and in how busy we are has caught me off guard, we normally have things quite tightly planned, but alas not this time. Coffees we are seeing disappear for a while are the Brazil Sata Terazina, the Brazil Perfetio, Verano and maybe some more once I check out our stocks. But don’t worry they will be back as soon as new crop lands. I’ll post some more late this week / the weekend.
