The new space

So the new space is kind of up and running. I’ve got a few photos

New packing Area

The cupping lab is not finished as I’m putting in some cupboards and have ordered a cool cupping table, but its getting there.

Cupping Lab

I cant tell you how much work this has been, its taken a lot of time and effort but its very cool. Once the lab is up and running its going to be a great space to cup.

The Bar

the bar area was built by our friend Bob who has done a great job. I’m very pleased with it, it has a hatch and door and everything. I even have a Beer hand pump on its way so I need never go home.

The Roastery

The Roastery also has more space now. the big gaps are so I can get the fork lift in and out easily, its great as we can hold so much more coffee now, so ordering need not be so stressed.

All in all its great to have it operational, even if there are some small jobs left to do.

Reading Material

A quick post I’ve been reading and enjoying a book that was recommended on one of the blogs I read. God in a cup is not perfect, it has somethings I don’t like but on the whole I’m really enjoying it (enjoying it far too much if the truth be known). Its not often you can read a book and go I know them, I’ve met them, I’ve cupped coffee with them.

Nothing in life is perfect but this is a good book, and well worth a read.

Find it at Amazon (and I’m sure other good book sellers) here

I should finish it on the train tomorrow as I’m off to London to Caffe Culture (a trade show). I’m presenting a small piece on the Cup of Excellence which should be fun.

Another new delivery

Another new roaster at Has Bean Towers. My Ambex YM 2 was the very first roaster I had, and has been used every day for over 7 years. I also got it second hand so it’s seen some service and roasted quite a few tons in its time. But around 18 months ago it suffered with a large fire, and its never bee the same since.

Our small roaster is as important to us as our big 25kg one as we roast to order every day, so I needed it to be replaced. After much soul searching (and penny searching) last october I ordered one from Ambex again.

Its taken a long while to come as we decided to have the full computer profiling unit for it around the time it was going to be shipped. I decided this was a good idea for consistency regardless of who is roasting it. Also its a great audit tool to go over past roasts.

We had a couple of issues when the machine first arrived but we have gotten over those now and have been waiting for it to be connected up the flue to exhaust it.

My chimney guy (who is a legend and does such a great job) did his thing this Saturday and I’ve been playing ever since. Its better than I could have imagined and I’m really pleased with it.

Some shots to get your interest :)

Wrap up from the trip.

Well i’ve been back a while now and haven’t really wrapped up the week away. El Salvador was absolutely amazing. The people make the place, and every one (and I truly mean everyone) we met was so special. The farms again memorable one of the best Times I’ve had. It was great to go to the COE presentation evening kind of icing on the cake.

More winning Farmers

La Fany was everything I hoped and more a great time

Up a La Fany Tree

El Bourbollon I wasn’t looking forward so much as its difficult to get excited about being from a number of farms and not one. But it was my biggest surprise of the trip. I loved it every part even feeling unwell.

El Bourbollon

The drive from El Salvador to Nicaragua I wouldn’t want to do again but getting to see so much of Nicaragua the first country I ever visited. But the first time I didn’t see anything apart from the capital. So to see ocatal and Matagalpa was very cool. Stopping on the farm was also great fun.

It was a tough this time with all the traveling I think I’m getting old and feeling it more than I used to. The friday I crashed in the hotel room and eat lots of room service, did some work surfed the net and watched some rubbish TV.

The hospitality of Roberto was legendary, and I will be forever grateful for the way he looked after us during our stay, special times indeed

Lots been happening since I’ve got back, some photos to share soon with the new space (the main reason for me being quite).

More blogging soon.

A Few more photos

A few more photos to go with yesterdays post (thanks Joe)

Thursday and a night sleeping with four coffee people

A night on the farm, and a good one too. I’m surprised sharing with four guys how much sleep I got. I hear the room next door was not so quite, and was a very late one for them. Roberto Bendaña the farm owner and our host has supplied us with a great place to base our selves from, and feeds us very well, the perfect host. I have found every one we have met on this trip has been incredibly generous not only with there time but there hospitality. Nothing is too much trouble, and I wonder if I could be so generous should they be visiting me. I do hope I would but worry I wouldn’t be able too.

The morning was 6am start to go looking at the birds around the farm. I took the opportunity to get in the shower shared by 8 men while they went looking at the birds I’m sure you can understand why. The farm where we were stopping was the first trip of the day. This was very good as it meant no travelling. Or so I thought I was able to get to drive these wicked 4 x 4 go cart style things, it was great fun. The farm is called El Quetzal and a coffee I hope will be available to us in a few weeks time.

Roberto took us to see the school thats on the farm, thats really well equipped. you can see from the photos below. Roberto is looking to put the internet into the class rooms so the children can do what normal kids do, and thats very much the feel of the farm, a small village where everyone was really happy and everyone waved.

From here we went on the 4 x 4 toys to El Paraíso and Los Altos. Los altos has just come under Robertos control and the first thing he is trying to do is improve accommodation for pickers.

It looks really nice and I did ask but there is no room at the inn for a useless picking gringo :)

We then went to visit the mill and a cupping of the coffees we visited. The standard was fantastic, and I look forward to seeing them on our range soon.

The last visit of the day was to Los Nogales (meaning ‘walnut trees’) and which the family recently took over. The farm at its best produced 4000 bags (thats right 4000) last year it produced just 400. But with some changes Roberto put into place he felt it was good enough to enter into this years Cup of Excellence competition. Well it obviously was as it came third and it tasted fantastic. Ohh yes the name comes from the walnut tress on the farm, of which I helped myself to one.

On the way back I chose to sit in the back of the 4 x 4 as its only close back to El Quetzal where we are stopping. As said before close in Nicaragua translates to anywhere between 30 min and three hours. But an elementary mistake was to leave me in the back on my own with my ipod and the cool box containing all the beers. Not feeling well all week I haven’t really drunk much alcohol but as I am feeling better what the heck. A few hours later we arrive back at El Quetzal and I’m worse for wear and my vice going from my own personal karaoke in the back :)

More great food, and a late night I’ve really enjoyed Nicaragua its been a blast. Tomorrow is a wind down day so I guess will be the perfect time to sum it all up then.
